The Christmas story is amazing for the many ways in which God offers himself to us in such deep and personal ways. In Luke 1:41 we hear this: "And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit." Meeting Jesus is to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit comes to reveal and glorify the Son.
The greatest mystery is that God chooses to become man. The smallest yet unborn child John, as well as the old mother Elizabeth, both have a connection to God. God is not just what we believe but the one who moves in us. It is a full body, mind and spirit experience that transcends generations and time.
This meeting of Mary and Jesus, and Elizabeth and John is a profound moment in human history. It is the intersection of Old and New Testaments. The promise and the fulfillment. The coming of Jesus at Christmas reminds us that He is coming again. When Jesus comes back our experience of Jesus will be far beyond what happened here.
My prayer for you is to echo Paul's prayer in Ephesians 3:19 "to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."
